Personal Statement

What have I accomplished?

I graduated from the University of Georgia in 1998 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and a minor in Drawing and Illustration.  For the next year I worked in a research laboratory at UGA doing research on sheep genomics.  This experience allowed me to further my book knowledge of genetics and expand my laboratory skills.

In 2000, I moved to Atlanta in order to give myself more opportunities for advancement.  I began working in a graphic design firm as a Project Coordinator.  While working in this firm I taught myself how to use Microsoft Access and CorelDraw.  I was soon able to fill in as a Project Designer when needed.  In just over a year with the company my ambition and determination allowed me to take on more responsibilities beyond the normal Project Coordination duties.

Since graduating from college, I have often considered teaching school.  In August of 2001, I began teaching in a public school in Dekalb County.  I am currently teaching Anatomy / Physiology and Biology to high school students.  This is one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences I have ever had.  Teaching high school is one of the best training techniques for learning how to be a manager.  On a daily basis, I do research over topics to cover, plan and present material, and manage 120 teenagers.  I am learning tremendous amounts about myself as well as how to relate to many other different background.

How am I utilizing my personal capabilities to create value?

I have always believed that whatever I do, I should do to the best of my ability.  When I decided to start working on my MBA, I thought of teaching school at the same time as a way of financing my efforts.  I thought that teaching would give me a more flexible schedule than a normal 9 to 5 job.  In many ways I was wrong; being a first year teacher involves much more preparation than I had ever dreamed.  I am using this experience to make myself grow and to improve my time management skills.  It takes a lot of hard work and determination to be prepared for 120 teenagers everyday and to do my work and be prepared for my MBA courses as well.  I am using this job to create value for myself by building my skills of organization, presentation, and even diplomacy.

Some people may wonder why a science teacher wants to get his MBA.  I once wanted to go to medical school and then for some reason changed my mind even though I still have a huge interest in science.  My second love has always been art and drawing and I enjoy being around people.  While working in the graphic design firm, I realized that I could combine my love of science with my love of art and interaction with people.  This is when I began to look at getting my MBA as a way to help me change careers and move into a management position in the scientific marketing field.

Why am I doing/ thinking about being what I am?

Besides the amount of experience I am gaining from teaching, I am also enjoying helping to educate America’s youth.  I love to interact with the students and learning about their goals and aspirations. I also try to give them a little insight on how they can achieve their goals.  They often ask me about the goals that I had when I was in high school.  I tell them that my goals have changed quite a bit over the past ten years.

As for now, in five years I plan to have my MBA and to be in the science-marketing field.  In approximately two more years I will be graduating with my MBA in marketing.  At this time I plan to go to work for a scientific or biomedical company in the marketing department.  I hope to work in the advertising and promotions department of such a company.  As well as teaching, I hope to spend my summers going to school and interning in my preferred field.

Why should anyone care?

I believe that my background and experiences help me create a unique value for myself that not many other people will have.  It is not often that someone in the marketing world also has a background in scientific research.  With this varied background I will be a great asset to any company.  My scientific background has taught me how to think outside the box and how to solve problems systematically.  This is a skill that can be of benefit to many different companies.

I hope that as I achieve my goals and set new goals for myself I hope that along the way I can help to benefit society and my friends and family.  Productive people are active members in their societies and usually have good relationships with their friends and family.  This is why I believe that as a goal-oriented productive person, I will be a benefit to my environment.
